In order correctly to define artwork, it is necessary, to begin with, to stop to contemplate it as a means to pleasure and to consider it among the conditions of human being life. Viewing it in this way we cannot neglect to observe that artwork is one of the method of intercourse between man and man. Every masterpiece of design causes the receiver to enter a certain kind of romantic relationship both with him who produced, or is producing, the art, and with all those who, concurrently, previously, or subsequently, receive the same artistic impression. Speech, transmitting the thoughts and encounters of men, serves as a way of union included in this, and art works in the same way.
The peculiarity of the latter method of intercourse, distinguishing it from intercourse by means of words, consists in this, that whereas by words a guy transmits his thoughts to some other, through art he transmits his emotions. The activity of art is based on the reality a man, getting through his sense of hearing or view another mans manifestation of feeling, is with the capacity of experiencing the feelings which moved the person who portrayed it. To consider the simplest example; one man laughs, and another who hears becomes merry; or a guy weeps, and another who hears feels sorrow.
A man is thrilled or annoyed, and another man seeing him involves a similar mind-set. By his actions or by the noises of his voice, a guy expresses dedication and courage or sadness and calmness, and this continuing state of brain goes by on to others. Art, in our society, has been so perverted that not only has bad art come to be considered good, but even the perception of what art really is has been lost.
In order to have the ability to discuss the artwork of our society, it is, therefore, to begin with necessary to differentiate artwork from counterfeit artwork.
